SHEPHERDING OUR CHILDREN'S HEARTS

"He who walks with the wise becomes wise."
Proverbs 13:20

As a wise parent, our main goal is to demonstrate a life lived in integrity toward GOD and our family. Godly parenting is shepherding the hearts of our children in the ways of God's wisdom.  We should expect that as we shepherd their hearts in teaching them to delight in the Word of God, that GOD's Word would be the only power to salvation in their lives.  But this is only accomplished by the power of the Gospel and not by a correct formula that would produce children who merely believe.

The central focus of parenting and the home is the Gospel.  We must direct not simply the behavior of our children, but the attitudes of their hearts. Our work is not just to show them what sin is and its failure, but the "why." Our children need desperately to learn not just the external "what" they did wrong, but also the internal "why."  Let's make sure that our most important goal for us as parents is to help them understand why they sin and how to repent.  Let's make sure that our main focus when shepherding our children's heart is to stay focused on the Gospel of Jesus Christ that is able to help them know forgiveness of sin through repentance in HIM, complete internal transformation of the heart.  Our goal again, is to make sure that our children adopt the message of the Gospel.  God's word is powerful !  If we teach our children the wisdom of the Word and its power, our children are going to be able to withstand the threats to their FAITH no matter what.

We need to teach the WISDOM there is in the Scriptures to our children.  The Bible teaches us that the heart is the control center for life.  Their life is merely a reflection of their heart. Proverbs 4:23 "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the well-spring of life."   Our children's behavior is merely a reflection of what is being taught in their hearts. "The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart."  Luke 6:45.  This is simply the main goal of shepherding our children's hearts, the point of childbearing.

Let's be sure to ask GOD's help in pursuing with a humble and righteous heart how to accomplish this important ministry in our children as fathers and mothers for His Glory.  Their souls are precious! What good does it do to teach the whole counsel of God to the whole world and not be able to save our precious children's souls.  It is in vain!  It takes self denial, hard labor, example and values.  But if these values are not convictions in Christ and based on deceptive philosophies of the world, then we waste our time and the world has total claim on their souls.  What a tragedy !

This requires the work of both fathers and mothers in the home.  We need to instruct them to walk wisely and righteously in God's Word, but we need to take the time to teach them.  It is not the church, the government or the schools' responsibility to do this but primarily our job as parents.  "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..."  Hosea 4:6.  This knowledge must be given primarily at home.  Let's not ignore the commands and statutes of our God when He says "You shall teach them [His statutes and judgments] diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your houses and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.  You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."  Deuteronomy 6:7-9.   This is very serious!  Let's not trust in those outside our homes who do not have the same convictions, love and commitments toward the Lord.

Let's join Joshua in saying  "Choose for yourselves today whom you will serve....but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."  Joshua 24:14-15.   Amen !

May our Lord give us the WISDOM to accomplish this important ministry in our children as fathers and mothers for His glory.   May we never forget that their souls are very precious !

P.S.  The following Hymn expresses my petition to God in behalf of our HOMES.

GOD GIVE US CHRISTIAN HOMES

God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the Bible is loved and taught,
Homes where the Master's will is sought,
Homes crowned with beauty Your love has wrought;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!

God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the father is true and strong,
Homes that are free from the blight of wrong,
Homes that are joyous with love and song;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!

God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the mother, in caring quest,
Strives to show others Your Way is best,
Homes where the Lord is an honored guest;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!

 God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the children are led to know
Christ in His beauty who loves them so,
Homes where the altar fires burn and glow;
God give us Christian homes;
God give us Christian homes!
